Creating a Multi-Purpose Library in a Wellness Retreat
Combe Grove is a wellness retreat set in the hills near Bath, designed to provide calm, connection, and rejuvenation. Interior designer Caroline Adams was commissioned to transform a tall, underutilised space into a multi-purpose library—a room that would serve as a reading area, a supper club venue, and a boutique retail corner.
Caroline’s brief was to blend beauty with practicality, creating a tranquil space that felt both inviting and adaptable for the retreat's guests.
Elevating the Space—Literally
During the concept design phase, Caroline proposed incorporating a bespoke rolling library ladder to help make the most of the room’s generous height. Inspired by a local bookshop in Bath, the ladder system added a classic design element while unlocking access to higher shelving.
“The ladder was planned from the outset,” Caroline says. “We designed a ring around the joinery to support the hardware, which made installation simple and seamless.”
A Functional Focal Point
The custom ladder and rail system does more than improve access—it defines the space. It creates a striking focal point and brings a sense of rhythm to the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. The addition of the ladder allowed for maximised vertical storage while enhancing the library’s elegance and usability.
“It completes the room,” Caroline notes. “The ladder offers access, structure, and style.”
Design That Resonates
The final space at Combe Grove has been a resounding success. “The Library is a very popular room,” Caroline shares. “We receive frequent compliments from staff, retreat guests, and metabolic members who love the feel of the space.”
The room now serves as a calm and inviting destination within the retreat, used for reading, relaxing, gathering, and shopping.
Would You Recommend It?
“I would highly recommend adding a library ladder to future projects—if the ceiling height allows!” Caroline concludes.
