Ged Kennett

Handles

We are proud to present this fantastic collection by Ged Kennett, a talented blacksmith based in Somerset. The stunning handle collection captures English elegance, luxury and mid-century design. Hammered, scratched and polished metal surfaces present an array of unique finishes in bold designs. Each and every handle is a one-off handmade piece and a work of art in its own right. Invest in a timeless detail that will never go out of fashion.

Handcrafted in the UK, ironmongery is taken to a whole new level, elevating brass, bronze and stainless steel into something ultra refined. Stylish, luxury knobs, bar, pull and half moon handles are available in a range of textured finishes and shapes to compliment your scheme.

With every touch, the handles continue to patinate and develop with age; something known as a ‘living finish’.

About Ged Kennett

Ged Kennett lives and works at Nettlecombe, a small country estate on the edge of Exmoor, in south west England.

Ged has been metalworking since 1995 and started his own business in 1997. After a few years of working to commission, making fine hand forged domestic ironwork, Ged discovered a need for beautifully designed and crafted cabinet fittings and started to concentrate in this area. He has been making handles ever since.

Originally working on his own, in a small dark workshop, his business steadily grew. Ged now has two workshops, full of beautiful old machinery, two full time workshop assistants and regular help with admin and packing. He also uses the talent of local metalworkers who produce various components for him in their own workshops. In 2009 he formed Contemporary Metals Ltd.

As a team they are dedicated to producing the finest quality fittings both in terms of design and manufacture, they constantly strive to improve their techniques of forming and finishing metal aspiring to produce flawless perfection. It’s easy to overlook the fact that their work employs the techniques of blacksmiths, processes which are traditionally used to produce much larger rougher work. Ged has refined these techniques, making his own special hammers and tools where necessary and has taught himself and his assistants how to use engineering equipment to ensure that not only are the handles beautiful they are also accurate.

Ged and his team are true craftsmen.

About the finishes

Living Finishes

All Ged’s handles made from brass have finishes which allow them to react to their environment. Their colour and polish (patina) will change with time and use; this is why they are said to have a Living Finish. Handles that receive heavy use will polish back to their underlying metal whilst those that receive little use will generally darken. The images below illustrate the handles following 6 months typical use. The used handles are displayed on the left of each pair.
