With consumers increasingly shopping online instead of the high street, it is always wonderful to see an independent shop opening its doors. Cockburns of Leith is an independent wine shop, however is not a new shop, having started back in 1796 being Scotland’s oldest wine merchant.

Contemporary Georgian Interior

The shop has recently changed location to 48a Frederick St, Edinburgh, where they collaborated with Supertonic. Supertonic are an interior design company who integrate brand thinking & communications into the design of environments to create unique and memorable spaces.
The brief for this design was, to create a vibrant, bright and airy branded retail environment - a flagship store. Supertonic wanted to acknowledge the features the shop already had and enhance a few architectural details.

Utilising height to get the most out of your space.

The main retail area is tall but narrow, therefore it was important to utilise the height. The ladder and higher level wine storage allow the brand to keep more product on the shop floor.
The Library Ladder Company supplied a safe, custom height ladder to Cockburns of Leith, which is used to access the high level shelving around the shop. The solid oak ladder sits at over three meters tall and rolls along 10 meters of rails.
Jessica our CEO said: “Shop floor space comes at a premium and by making use of the tall ceilings it ensures you get the most of your space. By fitting extra tall shelving and using one of our tall and safe ladders the shop can easily access the wine on a daily basis. The Ladders are designed to withstand the daily use of a retail shop as well as looking like a beautiful feature at the same time.”
