Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C is a premium, plant-based wood oil designed to colour and protect interior wood in a single application. It bonds to the wood fibres on a molecular level, rather than sitting on the surface like a lacquer or paint. This creates a durable, natural finish without film build-up.

Why choose Rubio?

  • One-coat system (colour + protection)
  • Natural matt finish that enhances grain
  • Quick curing time. 5 days (80% in 2 days)
  • Zero VOC, food-contact safe
  • Easy local repair (no sanding entire surface)

Where it’s used

  • Cabinetry & wardrobes
  • Interior joinery & panelling
  • Stairs, handrails & ladders
  • Furniture & shelving

Colours & Samples

Rubio Monocoat colours interact directly with the wood fibres, meaning the final appearance is influenced by the timber species, grain structure, sanding method and lighting conditions. As a result, the same colour can appear warmer, cooler, lighter or darker depending on the wood it is applied to.

For this reason, we strongly recommend testing a sample on the actual timber being used for your project before committing to a full application.

Using Sample Sachets

Rubio Monocoat sample sachets contain the same professional-grade product as full tins, but due to their small size correct preparation is essential:

  • Warm the sachet thoroughly before use (room temperature or slightly warmer)
  • Massage the sachet well to fully mix the contents prior to opening
  • Once opened, mix again before application to ensure even pigment distribution

Insufficient mixing may result in uneven colour or a misleading finish.

Sampling on Larger Areas

For projects covering larger surfaces such as flooring, staircases or extensive joinery, we recommend applying the sample across a larger test area rather than a single small patch. This allows you to see how the colour behaves across different grain widths and variations, giving a more accurate impression of the finished result.

Natural timber variation is part of what gives Rubio Monocoat its character, but proper sampling ensures confidence before full application.

Important Note

The oxidation of the oil leads to heat accumulation, which can result in spontaneous combustion. Therefore the cloths and other tools must be soaked in water before disposal.

Founded with a focus on innovation and sustainability, the brand is internationally recognised for pioneering one-coat wood oil technology that chemically bonds with wood fibres rather than forming a surface film.

Rubio Monocoat products are developed for professional joiners, cabinet makers, flooring specialists and designers who require durability, consistency and a natural aesthetic, without compromising on environmental standards. All products are manufactured in Belgium and adhere to stringent European quality and safety regulations.

The company places strong emphasis on:

Rubio Monocoat is widely specified for residential and commercial interiors, including cabinetry, flooring, stairs, furniture and architectural joinery, and is trusted globally by professionals seeking a refined, low-toxicity finish with proven performance.

Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery, in line with standard consumer regulations. Products must be returned in their original, sealed packaging and in a resaleable condition.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept returns on opened tins, used products or sample sachets, as these cannot be resold.

How can we help?

Rubio Monocoat Frequently Asked Questions

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C

Is Rubio Monocoat suitable for kitchen cabinets and furniture?

Yes. Rubio Monocoat is widely used on kitchen cabinetry, furniture and interior joinery. Once cured, it is hard-wearing, water-repellent and food-contact safe, making it well suited to domestic environments.

How should the Oil be applied?

After mixing Part A and Part B together, use a beige scrubby to massage the oil into the wood. After a few minutes a white scrubby should be used to remove any excess oil.

How long does Rubio Oil Plus 2C take to cure?

The Rubio Oil Plus 2C is supplied as a duo product. Part A is the oil and Part B is an accelerator which speeds up curing time to 5 days (80% in two days)

Benefits of the accelerator

  • Improves the wear-resistance of the finish - perfect for parquet floors, work-surfaces, stairs etc.
  • Speeds up finishing and installation times compared to traditional linseed oils and finishes on the market.
Can I use Rubio Monocoat on ladders, handrails or stairs?

Yes. Rubio Monocoat is suitable for ladders, stair treads, handrails and balustrades. For higher-wear areas, correct preparation and application are essential, and full curing time should be observed before heavy use.

Does Rubio Monocoat need a topcoat or sealer?

No. Rubio Monocoat is a one-coat system that colours and protects the wood in a single application. It bonds to the wood fibres on a molecular level, penetrating the wood, so no additional varnish, lacquer or sealer is required.

Can Rubio Monocoat be repaired or refreshed later?

Yes. One of the key benefits of Rubio Monocoat is that it allows for localised repair. Small areas can be lightly prepared and re-oiled without needing to sand back the entire surface.

Will the colour look the same on all wood types?

Not necessarily. Rubio Monocoat reacts with the wood fibres, so the final colour will vary depending on timber species, grain structure and sanding method. We always recommend testing a sample on the actual timber being used.

Do I need to use a primer or pre-treatment?

In most cases, no primer is required. However, for certain wood species or where colour consistency is critical, Rubio pre-treatment products may be recommended. Please contact us if you’d like advice for a specific project.

How long does Rubio Monocoat take to dry and cure?

Rubio Monocoat is typically touch dry within 24–36 hours. Light use is possible after 48 hours, with full cure achieved after approximately 7 days. Avoid water exposure during the early curing period.

Is Rubio Monocoat safe to use indoors?

Yes. Rubio Monocoat is zero VOC, solvent-free and safe for indoor use. Once cured, it is suitable for homes with children and pets.

How should finished surfaces be cleaned and maintained?

We recommend using Rubio Monocoat Soap or Surface Care products for regular cleaning. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners, as these can affect the finish over time.
