Ordering a bespoke library ladder might feel daunting, but with the right measurements, it’s simple. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your space so you can choose the right ladder, rail, and accessories with confidence.

Step 1: Find Your Rail Height

The most important measurement is the rail height – the distance from the floor to the centre of where the rail will sit.

  • If you already have joinery or a bookcase in place, measure straight up from the floor to the intended rail position.

  • If your project is still in planning, choose a ladder size that works for your space, then ensure your bookcase is designed to accommodate the rail at that height.

👉 Tip: Write this measurement down, as it’s the key piece of information we need for your order.

Step 2: Rail Height vs. Ladder Length

It’s important to know the difference between these two terms:

  • Rail height = the measurement from the floor to the centre of your rail (what you measure).

  • Ladder length = the actual side length of the ladder itself.

Because the ladder sits at an angle, the ladder length is always slightly longer than the rail height.
👉 As a guide, your ladder length will be about 5 inches (127mm) longer than your rail height.

Example:

  • If your rail height is 8ft (2311mm) → your ladder length will be about 8ft 5in (2438mm).

✅ When ordering a made-to-measure ladder, you only need to provide us with the rail height. We’ll do the calculation and ensure your ladder is built to the perfect length.

Step 3: Choose Your Ladder Height

We offer two options:

  • Standard ladders – stocked in:

    • 7ft (2134mm) → for a rail height of 2007mm

    • 8ft (2438mm) → for a rail height of 2311mm

    • 9ft (2743mm) → for a rail height of 2620mm

    • 10ft (3048mm) → for a rail height of 2920mm

  • Made-to-measure – custom ladders ranging from 3ft (914mm) to 14ft (4267mm). Simply provide your rail height and we’ll build the ladder to suit.

What to Expect When Your Ladder Arrives

Your ladder will arrive unassembled and unfinished, ready for you to paint or stain in your desired colour or finish.

Each delivery includes:

  • Two side strings, pre-drilled and notched

  • A full set of steps

  • A turned wood hand rung for the top of the ladder

You will need to assemble the ladder yourself. If you’re not confident with a drill, we recommend asking a trusted carpenter or joiner to help with assembly.

Preparation Before Finishing

We recommend lightly sanding your ladder before applying your chosen finish. This removes any small snags in the timber and gives the smoothest surface for painting, staining, or lacquering.

👉 A little prep goes a long way in achieving a professional, long-lasting finish.

Tools Required

  • Drill

  • Screwdriver

  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)

  • Wood filler (optional, for touch-ups)

  • Paintbrushes or cloths (depending on finish)
