Let's delve into the details of this remarkable case study and discover the insights shared by the NOOK team.

The Client Brief: Breathing Life into History

The client's vision was clear: to breathe life into this period property, creating a welcoming family home for themselves and their two young boys. The challenge was to retain the original character of the building while ensuring seamless functionality and modern amenities, including seamless Wi-Fi throughout. The colour palette had to be soft and gentle, with bold accents, and the goal was to create a stylish yet comfortable space where the family could eat, work, and play together.

Proportions and Design: An Ode to Beauty

The proportions of the bookcase design in the study were a critical consideration. The impressive room with its ornate cornice and high skirting required a design that complemented these features. The wall chosen for the study furniture was carefully selected to not detract from the original coving. The scale of the wall dictated that everything designed be larger than life, with even a 60" TV looking diminutive in the centre.

Elevating the Design: Clever Elements

The study furniture needed to be practical and visually appealing. The design incorporated picture lighting, concealed cables, and a rolling ladder. These elements were integrated to ensure a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality. The lighting and electrical plans were thoughtfully developed to hide cables, providing beautiful illumination for both display and books.

The Ladder Choice: A Functional Elegance

Nook have worked with The Library Ladder Company for several years, and have incorporated ladders into several beautiful projects, from bookcases, library rooms to media units. When considering the perfect ladder for The Ridings Mill, Nook opted for a 9ft full rolling ladder, made from solid Oak with bronze fixtures and fittings. The ladder not only add grandeur to the furniture, the effortless rolling aspect of the ladder adds a sense of luxury and opulence.

The rolling ladder offered easy access to all cupboards and drawers, making it an indispensable addition to the room. The choice of painting the ladder to match the furniture further emphasised its seamless integration.

The Paint and Finish: A Touch of Class

The dark blue colour adorning the bookcase is Basalt by Little Greene. The furniture is hand-painted on-site, ensuring a finish that's truly unique and highly attractive. The process involves priming, two coats of the finished colour, all laid off with specialist brushes, and a final coat of glaze for protection.
